John Sweeney defeats Rafael Do Nascimento after being stripped of the title at LFA 188

CHANDLER, Arizona — In the Valley of the Sun, the LFA produced a stacked international event just two weeks before the Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. LFA 188 featured 26 fighters from 10 countries across 5 continents. In the main event, former LFA bantamweight champion John “Hollywood” Sweeney showed no signs of ring rust despite being inactive for 13 months and being stripped of the title the day before after he weighed-in 6.4 pounds over the championship weight limit. The South Carolina native dominated former LFA title challenger Rafael “Mulisha” Do Nascimento, who came up short in his second shot at the title. The five round one-sided championship (only Do Nascimento was eligible to win the title with a win) was a bloody striking affair that also included a couple of grappling exchanges and submission attempts. The judges awarded Sweeney the Unanimous Decision  with scores that read 50-45, 50-45, 49-46. In the co-main event, LFA and Dana White’s Contender Series alum Kasey Tanner bounced back from his first career loss in a big way by submitting Brazilian veteran Thiago “Bananinha” Melo. Tanner finished the fight via a Rear Naked Choke at 3:52 of Round 1. The other fight results can be found below:
